In our gallery G18 we try to give space to important social topics. That’s why this year we have joined the programme of Fashion Revolution, a worldwide movement for a more sustainable fashion industry. The International Fashion Revolution Week will kick off on Earth Day on 22 April and run until Saturday 29 April. Fashion Revolution is an international initiative that was launched in London in direct response to the collapse of the Bangladeshi garment factory Rana Plaza on 24 April 2013.
In their wreckage, 1,130 people died and more than 2,500 others were injured. The main aim of Fashion Revolution is to raise awareness in society about how the fashion industry works and the negative impacts it brings. The campaign also seeks to make the supply chain of clothing brands as transparent as possible.
The week will kick off with the opening of a showroom of work by students from the Design of Clothing and Design of Footwear studios at the G18 gallery on Monday. We will continue with creative recycling and upcycling workshops, a film screening, and a lecture on sustainable materials.

Sneaker upcycling workshop
Have you ever wondered what happens to the sneakers that have been returned? They always end up in the incinerator. But there are some exceptions. For example, the Czech sneaker store Footshop provides recycled sneakers to young designers who use them to make new usable accessories or artworks. That’s why on
Tuesday, April 24, 2023, at 3 PM, there will be a workshop with Arnost Mikulicka, a student of the Footwear Design Studio, who will guide you through the creative upcycling* of advertised sneakers.
Film screening of Fashion Goes Green
Tuesday evening will end
at 5 PM with a screening of
Fashion Goes Green, followed by a discussion with director Emanuele Ruggiero. This documentary explores the cultural heritage of Brno’s textile industry and shows how history intertwines with the present; how this heritage is revealed in the contemporary city and its new textile projects. Who are the people creating textiles in Brno today? Where is the industry heading? Is it just a local scene, or are there potential openings outside our region and country? What makes South Moravia rich and unique? The main story line is: history – tradition – innovation – sustainability. /English friendly
Banner upcycling workshop
Advertising banners are a widely used material that cease to function after the event and usually go to the landfill or incinerator. On
Wednesday, April 26, 2023, come breathe new life into potential waste and create an original piece to freshen up your wardrobe! From
2 PM, a workshop awaits you with Tereza Černohorská, who upcycles banner cloth to create great backpacks, belt bags, wallets and other accessories. You may know her work from the Moravian Gallery merch or the Rock for People festival. At the workshop you can create simple bags, crossbags, wallets or other accessories.
Lecture Materials / Textiles / Sustainability
On
Thursday 27 April 2023 at 3 PM, a lecture will be held by the
MatériO Prague Materials Library, which focuses on the environmental impact of materials and the application of the principles of the circular economy. The lecture, entitled
Materials / Textiles / Sustainability, will take you through the life cycle of textile materials, look at the various environmental impacts and reveal how best to select materials for more sustainable production. Is cotton or recycled polyester better? What are the sustainability challenges facing the fashion and textile industry? What about new innovative materials? Are they really better?
Screening of the documentary Slay
On
Thursday at 7 PM, we will take a look under the hood of fashion with a screening of the documentary Slay, which reveals the behind-the-scenes of the fashion industry. The documentary looks at fur, leather and wool, greenwashing and the impact of brands using animal skin on people, the planet and animals.
Workshop NESHITA
On
Saturday, 28 April 2023, from 10 AM, in cooperation with the
QUITKOVA atelier, we are organizing a workshop called NESHITA, which is for anyone who wants to make their own bag but doesn’t really want to sew. The NESHITA workshop is based on a creative approach, unconventional solutions and simplicity, which is beauty. Experience design therapy and take away not only the experience, but also a NESHITA bag made from discarded banners that will get a second chance thanks to you. Everything you need to work will be ready for you on the spot.
From
Tuesday 25 to Friday 27 April, we will be offering an educational program for primary and secondary schools in the morning from
